Beyond Sake

"Beyond Sake" came to life to show the connection between sake and the community, the people, the local food and crafts, to tell a wider story. It is not about tasting profiles or brewing methods...

"Beyond Sake" is a project created by Cindy Bissig, photographer, writer, and sake professional, relentlessly traveling around Japan, visiting producers and sake brewers to showcase and document her experience of this unique part of Japanese culture. Through her work she lets you see into the hidden communities connected by this wonderful beverage. Hardworking, gentle, dedicated, and full of creativity, while having one foot solidly planted in tradition. This is an ongoing project with the intention to publish the first volume by the end of 2022.

"Japanese sake is so much more than just a beverage, it connects people and plays a huge part in the local communities beyond the obvious."
